How To Set up Your Whatsapp Business Account in Under 10 Minutes

It’s so easy to use and facilitates communication with customers. After all that you’ve read about WhatsApp Business and what it has to offer, you’ve decided to sign up for a WhatsApp Business account.

But where do you begin?

Setting up a WhatsApp Business account with the WhatsApp Business app is a very straightforward process.

In this post, we’ll go into exactly how you can do that. Just follow along and you’ll soon have a WhatsApp Business account set up in no time.

What Is a WhatsApp Business Account

Before we dive into the technicalities, let’s first look at what a WhatsApp Business account actually is.

A WhatsApp Business account is just as its name suggests. It’s an account for companies both big and small to use so that they can interact with their customers through the world’s most popular instant messaging app, WhatsApp.

Designed for companies in mind, it offers many more features beyond what the personal WhatsApp Messenger app has.

These include setting up a catalog to showcase company products and services, creating message templates for quick communication with customers, automating messages, and many more.

WhatsApp Business accounts fall into two categories:

  • An official business account
  • A (regular) business account

The “official business account” status comes with the WhatsApp Business API, whereas the “business account” status applies to businesses using the free-to-use WhatsApp Business app.

In this post, we’ll be focusing on the latter and teaching you how to create a WhatsApp Business account using the app. However, we’ll also be touching on the differences between these two WhatsApp business tools later in the post.

If you’re ready, let’s get straight to creating a WhatsApp Business account using the WhatsApp Business app.

How To Create WhatsApp Business Account Step by Step

The WhatsApp Business app is available for smartphones operating on two of the most popular operating systems—Android and iOS.

In this section, we’ll be showing you, step by step, the entire process of creating a WhatsApp Business account.

That means everything from downloading the app, installing it, and creating your WhatsApp Business account and profile.

We’ll be using an Android device in our example but the steps and processes are the same on Apple devices.

Step 1: Get the WhatsApp Business App

First and foremost, go to the Google Play Store (or the Apple App Store) to download and install the WhatsApp Business app.

The app’s logo is essentially the same as the iconic green WhatsApp app, but with the alphabet “B” enclosed in the speech bubble. (No prizes for guessing what it stands for!)

After you’ve downloaded and installed the app, open and launch it.

The first thing you’ll have to do is agree to its terms and services. If you want to give it a read before installing the app, you may also find it on WhatsApp’s website

Step 2: Register a WhatsApp Business Account

Next, you’ll need to create a WhatsApp Business account.

If you already have a personal WhatsApp account, at this point, you’ll be asked if you would like to use your personal WhatsApp number as your business number or register a new number.

Now, even though the WhatsApp Business app can be used concurrently with the regular WhatsApp app, we do not recommend using your personal number as your business number because it can only be used for just one of the two.

In other words, choosing to use your personal WhatsApp number for your business means losing it for your personal use.

If you want to register a new number for your business, select “use a different number.”

You’ll be prompted to enter the number you would like associated with your business.

After entering the new number, WhatsApp will send a six-digit verification to the number you’ve indicated. If the number is correct, the app should detect the code automatically. Otherwise, you can enter the code yourself manually.

How To Switch From WhatsApp To Whatsapp Business

If you’d like to use your existing personal number for your business, you will be required to move your chat history, media, and contact information from your personal WhatsApp app to the WhatsApp Business app.

You will also need to grant the WhatsApp Business app access to your phone’s contact list and media files.

If your account is protected by a two-step verification, you’ll need to enter the PIN number to proceed.

WhatsApp will then begin transferring all chats and media files over to the WhatsApp Business app. Note that this process may take a few minutes.

Step 3: Create a Whatsapp Business Profile

Once you’ve registered a new business number or successfully transferred the data from your personal WhatsApp account to your WhatsApp Business account, give yourself a pat on the back because at this stage, you officially already have a WhatsApp Business account.

However, no account is complete without information about what the business actually is.

So the next step to this is to create a WhatsApp business profile.

The app will prompt you to add a business image, display name, description, and address to complete your profile.

Remember that it’s always better to over-communicate than under-communicate. Plus, no customer’s ever complained of information overload. So we recommend filling in all of these fields to provide your customers with as much detail as possible about your business.

You can also assign a category to your business and WhatsApp offers plenty of options for you to choose from.

Once that’s done, you can either start to explore all the business tools available on the app, which includes managing business hours and information, adding a product catalog, and setting up automated responses to customer queries, or save that for later.

Either way, a big congratulations to you because you’re done! You’ve successfully set up your WhatsApp Business account and profile!

Getting Your Account Verified

If you want to go the extra mile, and we certainly recommend that you do, consider verifying your WhatsApp Business account.

Visually speaking, that means having that coveted green tick next to your business’s display name on your business profile to boost confidence and gain trust from your customers.

But what it really is is a symbol and representation of an authentic brand—confirmed and verified by WhatsApp themselves.

Right now, the only way to score this verification is through a more complicated process as it requires getting a WhatsApp Business API (more on this in the next section). For more information, do give our guide on how to verify a WhatsApp Business account a read.

Other Ways To Create a WhatsApp Business Account

Downloading the free-to-use WhatsApp Business app aside, there’s another way to create a WhatsApp Business account.

It involves getting the WhatsApp Business API, which is a slightly longer and more tedious process. There is also a pricing component to the API. However, it offers a lot more features and benefits for companies.

The WhatsApp Business API can only be obtained through an official WhatsApp Business Service Provider (BSP) like WATI.

Whether you require the WhatsApp Business API depends on what stage your business is at. While the free WhatsApp Business app is catered to small businesses and entrepreneurs, the API is designed with larger and growing businesses in mind.

WATI is owned by Clare.AI, an innovative startup and digital tool that brings together machine learning and artificial intelligence to create cutting-edge and revolutionary customer communication solutions. The company is proudly trusted by a host of Fortune 500 companies.
